I (Still) Love SciFi.

Punk Rock/Indie Rock/Hardcore Videos
Home is San Diego. School was UMass Amherst. But I'm home again.
I kind of sort of totally booked a last minute trip to Taiwan.
...so now I'm in Taipei for 2012.

22 days on the clock.

No one reads this fucking tumblr but I’ll be back in the US (NoLA) on May 26th for a few weeks before heading out to Guatemala/Mexico and finally (hopefully) getting a scholarship to come back to Taiwan for a year sometime in September of 2014.

Holler at me if you got any info/hookups in Guatemala/Mexico. I know about Nadie Es Libre records in Guatemala and plan on sending a message to them and Bumbklaat for more info as it gets closer to the date.

Sleaze 湯湯水水 @ Pipe Livehouse (Taipei, Taiwan) on 03.08.13

I care very little about baseball and very much about how many times I can see Sleaze 湯湯水水 before I have to leave Taiwan. They added a saxophone player to this show and it worked so fucking well. Also because I’m a social train wreck, I’m constantly worried the band members think I’m a jerk because my Chinese is still relatively terrible (less so than when I first came!) and so I’m shy and in the corner for most of the shows for fear of vomiting gibberish Chinese all over them when we do talk. Over over over thinking shit is fun, yeah? ANWAYZZZ enjoy the video of my boyz, “Fuck shit up blue”/etc.

Slow and steady

I moved from my old apartment into a new half dorm half hotel thing at NTU last Monday. The internet connection in the rooms is unbelievably slow so its going to take awhile to upload all the videos from last Friday.

Killie (from Tokyo, Japan) @ Pipe Livehouse (Taipei, Taiwan) on 03.08.13

Killie (pronounced kir-ai) from Tokyo, Japan playing screamo in the vein-ish of Envy. Norton (singer of Sleaze) who booked the show said it was their first show outside of Japan ever. Taiwan went fucking off for them. Such a fun show.

Taiwan Time Capsule | No. 186 / November 1998

Randomly browsing the internet last night during a bout of insomnia and came across an old Scene Report on Taiwan from a 1998 issue of MRR.

Check it out here. (it’s two pages, first one starts on the right and then you have to “flip”)

Pretty funny to see a slice of Taiwan’s punk history on the web, among the more amusing bits:

  • The writer talking about how the Spring Scream festival got broken up and was worried if there would be another. (its been going on ever since and will be 19 years this year)
  • A mention of Fei Wu (you know, the “I Love Taiwan Beer” guys) before they even had a cd (they just played a one off reunion show)
  •  Mention of Underworld as a mostly acoustic show venue.

There’s another more recent Scene Report on Taiwan in issue 264, if anyone has a copy and can scan me it I’d be forever grateful.

For non punk related history, whoever this is: shihlun.tumblr.com is KILLING it in the vintage-photos-of-Taiwan department. Be sure to search their page for the tags “Taiwan” and “Taipei”.

Roundabout

Everything I usually do (Museums/Parks) is either closed for Chinese New Years or rained out.

Anyone know of fun things to do/hidden places I may not have found in Taipei yet?

Every time I think I’m bummed on Punk or stop listening because of certain people, it smacks me upside the head and tells me to stop being stupid.

Heard the first three notes to this song last night before bed and I got fucking butterflies in my stomach for the first time in a long, long time.

Touming Magazine (透明雜誌) @ Soochow University (東吳大學) for 「You&Me」 on 12.23.12

Full @ http://archive.org/details/12.23.12_ToumingMagazine

Touming Magazine closing things off. The sound is a bit off because the crowd kept on destroying their pedal set up. The singer runs the label that put the show together and the guitarist Sheng-wen is the righteous dude that I used to see every time i went to Waiting Room (RIP :-[ ) and bother about music, haha. Taiwan has a music scene that is just fucking wonderful. Came here expecting to go to one show the whole time I was here and ended up finding a group of people just getting together to stave off the cold, if only just for a little bit.

Forests from Taiwan playing surf-y/garage-y indie rock. The Boyz of “Boyz & Girl” (see the Skip Skip Ben Ben post below)

Sleaze 湯湯水水 @ Soochow University (東吳大學) for 「You&Me」 on 12.23.12 (Sample)

Sleaze destroying everything in their path. One of the best sets, if not THE BEST set, I’ve seen so far this year. Watch in 1080p if your computer can handle it. Sleaze was the first band I saw when I got here, I’m so glad the last show I’m going to this year had them playing as well.
